Theft of cycles/cycle crime

As part of our prevention initiative, the beat team have held numerous bike register events alongside Dr. Bike. These events provide an opportunity for officers to speak directly with cyclists and residents about their concerns. 

The beat team also regularly patrol key areas where large amount of bikes are kept. This includes temporary bike sheds at the university, Leicester Royal Infirmary, HMP Welford and student accommodations. Raising awareness is the first step in helping people keep hold of their property and to ensure it is robustly secured. All theft related incidents across the Riverside beat are targeted by officers to not only help prevent incidents, but to also pursue offenders to ensure they are brought to justice. 

Over September, there have been limited reports of theft of cycles which is positive. The beat team have held another Op Pedalfast which targets illegal e-bikes and e-scooters. This operation has been in the city centre for over a year now and a significant number of vehicles have been seized after being ridden illegally. Not only does this help get overpowered vehicles off our footpaths, parks and highways, it also prevents the risk of collisions with people and property. You may have seen reports when they are involved in incidents and the impact it has on people’s lives. This is why the Op will continue to take place even when not showing as a priority on the beat.
